Regarding his participation in my assignment at the Wyndham Harbour Island hotel in December.
The assignment was to inventory embedded chip assets (PC's -- hardware and software -- and non-IT) as part of a pilot project to demonstrate DMR's competence to assess the Y2K readiness of these assets at several hundred Wyndham properties. The two-day assignment came on very short notice, and we sought help from the Tampa office. John got the call.
The pilot was not just the first we'd done for Wyndham; it was the first we'd done anywhere, which took John about two seconds to figure out, as ourinstructions and documentation were still in the formative stages. So we quickly worked out some simple ground rules, and John went at it as if we do this all the time. Since we had no good benchmarks, we worked right through lunch on the first day, and the job got done well within the allotted time.
The hotel staff had also received very short notice of our assignment -- actually, they were told upon our arrival. So we did have some concern about their reaction upon being asked to leave their desks as we accessed the individual workstations. But the combination of John's easy humor and efficient manner made it a non-issue; it almost seemed as if the staff was enjoying the diversion.
After submitting to us his portion of the inventory -- in precisely the form and format we needed, John followed up with a number of suggestions that have helped to make the process more efficient.
I was not pleased at having to travel on such short notice, three days before Christmas. Partnering with John made it a pleasant trip because he was so instrumental in making it a successful one.
I'd be pleased to work with him anytiime.
(And we did get the larger Wyndham contract!)
